What's your business, and who are your customers?

LET'S MAKE ROOM helps homeowners downsize and organize their homes, as well as plan and manage their moves in preparation for selling or remodeling their homes or simply to enjoy their lives with less clutter. Owner Lis McKinley, M.A., also helps her clients discover and pursue the goals and actions that matter most to them as an organizer/life coach.

Tell us about yourself

It started one day when a bottle of antiperspirant hit me on the head. Read more here https://letsmakeroom.com/about-lis/. As long as I know I can make a real impact on other people's day-to-day lives, I am satisfied. If I can do that and make them feel special or help them achieve their goals or dreams, that's even better. I put my trust in my team, our clients, those that support us, and my own ability to get things done with compassion, efficiency, and a fierce commitment to those we serve.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Remain in business after 14 years. Being the top-rated home organizing business in the San Francisco Bay Area. Completing my training to become a Certified Organizer Coach while running a full-time business.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Taking on roles or tasks that are not my greatest strengths but still need to get done.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do what you are good at, enjoy, and solve a problem for someone else or the world.
  2. Try to start your business with just a small amount of capital and do what you can at first to avoid debt. Take a couple of years to be sure you like running your business and that it can make money before seeking funding.
  3. Don't be afraid to ask your customers/clients for feedback (not just reviews). What they tell you could help you be better at what you do.
