What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a career transition coach, and I specialize in working with mid-career professionals interested in transitioning to new industries.
Tell us about yourself
I started my business when I stepped away from higher education to work in a new industry. I experienced first-hand how difficult it can be to make the transition and the expectations of working in the corporate world. I set out to create a business to help others avoid the problems and challenges that I experienced first-hand.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Bootstrapping and scaling my own business! I had no formal business experience and learned everything on my own. I invest a lot of my profit into my business to continue offering the best services I can provide.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Since I continue to work full-time and have a family with two young children, balancing my time and making sure I'm giving my best to all of my commitments is always a challenge. I have had to put more boundaries on my time and what I commit myself to.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
You don't have to spend a lot of money to get started. I started with less than $500, and I have no debt. At some point, however, you'll have to invest small amounts into products and, ideally, business coaching in order to scale your business. Finally, don't take anything too personally! You will experience rejection, but it's not you that they're rejecting, it's just that you're not the best fit for them at the moment.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
I encourage anyone to give it a try if you've ever considered offering your services. There are many opportunities, and it doesn't take a lot to get started!
