What's your business, and who are your customers?

Legendary Lawns is a family-owned and operated lawn care and snow removal company serving residents of NW Calgary, Alberta. We service over 100 properties in NW Calgary for winter and over 250 in Spring and Summer for lawn care. The majority of our customers are seniors, and our services ensure properties are safe and maintained, supporting residents' mental and physical health.

Tell us about yourself

The idea of Legendary Lawns began in 2015 when Jordan (my brother) recognized a local need and niche to offer simple snow shovelling and mowing services in his home community. Slowly increasing offerings and helping community members, he grew Legendary Lawns into an increasingly successful entity.

In winter 2020, Jordan took the leap to formally create a larger Legendary Lawns Ltd brand and increase his impact. He engaged his older sister (me!) and younger brother to co-own the company, and we officially incorporated. Born and raised in the community we serve, we understand the local needs and the importance of fostering relationships.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

In less than two years as a small business, we are already making our mark in the industry - this is indicated by dozens of happy customer testimonials. Our services are in high demand, as indicated by our 2021/2022 Snow Removal routes (of 115 spaces) were all full prior to the first snowfall. We are proud that even during the pandemic and lockdowns, we were able to grow.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about being a business owner is balance. When you own and operate the business, sometimes it's hard to take a vacation as well as sick days, as customers and the successful delivery of services rely on you. But as you grow and learn, systems and processes come into place, and it becomes easier.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just start! There is never a perfect moment to begin your business, and you will learn along the way.
  2. Don't undervalue your time and services. It is important to charge a fair amount for your product/services, as this also allows you to innovate and continue to grow.
  3. Surround yourself with the right people who support you - when the going gets tough, they will be there to help. And when things are going well, they will be by your side to celebrate.
