Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in fashion but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mera Davision, Founder of Legendary Design, located in Detroit, MI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I run a clothing brand that is based on building a supportive community where everyone is legendary in their own right. In this community, we also focus on self-growth and striving to do better for ourselves and those around us. Our customers are mainly young adults who are into lifestyle fashion with dope graphics, but honestly, anyone could wear our clothes.

Tell us about yourself

I have always loved fashion. As a kid, I used to sketch clothes all the time. As I got older, I started to cut up and DIY my own clothes, so my passion really came from my love of fashion as a kid. And being an athlete, I am often in sweats, which were at the time very plain and simple. This was when I had the idea to add some spice to the typical sweats and lifestyle clothing. It is what you can now see a lot of bigger brands like Nike and Adidas starting to do even with their most traditional pieces.

What keeps me motivated even on the days when I am overwhelmed is that this is honestly a passion of mine. I love to create, and there is so much you can do within the world of fashion.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Well, it has only been about a year and a half into business, so there are a lot of goals I want to reach and a lot of lessons I still have to learn. Even in this short time, I would have to say the biggest accomplishment would have to be having a few repeat customers. I really did not expect a few customers to come back so sooner, and it can be difficult to build brand loyalty when starting out. So to see that happen was extremely heartwarming.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things I have come across with being a business owner would have to be finding resources when first starting out. Most people are very hush-hush when it comes to how they got to where they are. So finding resources and building a connection from ground zero was definitely hard for me, as I had no experience as a clothing brand owner.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Some days are going to be harder than others, so embrace them because there is most likely a lesson to be learned in the hardship.
  2. Never stop learning; there is always something new to learn, especially with how fast everything evolves today.
  3. Don't let other people's fears stop you from going after what you want for your business. Hear what they say, process it, and determine if it applies to you and if it is a risk you are willing to take, but never let it completely stop you in your tracks.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Every day is a chance to start fresh and be better than you were before. So have a plan and a vision to guide you and continue to work at it. One day you will look back and be glad you didn't give up.
