Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in branding and marketing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with KC Clark, Founder of Legacy Co, located in Asheboro, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Legacy Co is a full brand development and management agency devoted to helping brands, entrepreneurs, and artists make a lasting impression on customers and build sustainable practices in life and work.

Tell us about yourself

My name is KC Clark, and I am the Chief Curator for Legacy Co, a resource for the creative class. In addition to running a full brand development and management agency, I am a full-time artist, mentor, and coach. A curator is someone who tends to the heart and soul of a person while also identifying and gathering the best parts of that person and determining the best way to put them on display, so their message is seen and heard. My passion for seeing artists, brands, and non-profits thrive is rooted in a desire for individuals with unique perspectives to come alive to their calling in both life and career pursuits.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Accolades are great. I'm not a recipient of any rewards that are noteworthy. As a steward of so many clients' ideas and dreams, my greatest reward is knowing I've carried their project or idea to completion and given them the sustainable practices to watch it grow and scale successfully.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Pioneering is lonely because no one is going before you to show you the way. This is the hardest thing about being a business owner. Though you may share similarities in your niche with other businesses or brands, they do not carry the burden of stewarding your god-given vision that is unique to who you are, your experience, your skill sets, but most importantly, your perspective and calling.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

The first thing I would tell any aspiring business owner is that you have to be called. Running a business isn't merely a means to a financial end. It's a passion that causes you to get up every day with a different end in mind. One that is dedicated to making something in your world and the world around you better.

Second, You have to know that you are providing an innovation or solution that is needed in the world. Whether it's a brand new idea or you are improving on an already existing one, you must know that you are bringing something to the table that is meaningful to your customers and sustainable from a financial standpoint.

Lastly, do not grow weary in your pursuit of the passion and calling you felt at the beginning. Be nimble, evolve, and stick to it. The many iterations of my own company have become a testament in my own business journey that you must be willing to pivot or shift your methods and directions. The initial idea may change, and that's ok. If your desire is to be a business owner, then e willing to hold the outcome loose until you achieve that dream.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

BONUS:
Don't let competition rule your decision-making process. Stay the course and avoid the comparison trap. Resist scarcity thinking - remember, the pie really is big enough. Trust the source of your inspiration. Get mentors and do what they tell you to do. Collaborate often; you will learn from your peers and from yourself. In the end, you will be better if you seek to serve rather than strive to dominate.
