Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Curtis McFadden, Owner of LeeM Studios, located in Florence, SC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own LeeM Studios, a photography business based in Florence, SC. I do photography for every occasion, so my customers are wide-ranging. I do studio portraits, weddings, events, and concept art photography.

Tell us about yourself

I first got into photography seriously because one of my closest friends urged me to take it seriously after doing so pictures for her. She is directly responsible for me being the photographer I am today. I always give her that credit and respect because she believed in me when I didn’t. Now I’m motivated to make memories through the pictures I take. Pictures tell stories. I pride myself on giving the best picture I possibly can with every snap of my camera.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is seeing my clients happy with my work. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing a client’s face light up when seeing their pictures.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Staying consistent in the low moments. Clients are hard to find at times. Photography is a VERY competitive business. While these moments are hard, God always seems to provide me with the encouragement needed to keep going.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Never stop learning in whatever field your business is in.
  2. Make a plan for consistent growth. No matter how small the increase is, always plan to get better and grow your brand. No one will grow it for you.
  3. Don’t quit in the low moments. It’s just the process. Do the work. It will pay off.
