Capturing Precious Family Moments - Leanne Murray

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Leanne Murray, Owner of Intuition Photography by Leanne, located in St. Marys, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is documenting moments in time for couples, families, friends, and businesses to carry & pass on for years to come. Everyone is my Customer!!!

Tell us about yourself

I feel like the luckiest person in the world that I discovered my creative path at such a young age. I come from a large family, the youngest of 7. My oldest brother was getting married when I was 10 years old. What I remember most from that day was watching as the photographer carefully placed my sister-in-law's dress fall coloured leaves all around us. At that moment, I knew I wanted to be a part of creating these memories. I followed this path through college and field placements with amazing photographers such as Sandra Dufton, who pushed me to strike out on my own. It made me so nervous to start a business until Christmas of 2004, when my dad gifted me my business license. With my dad passed on now, it is one of my most cherished memories and pushes me to move forward every day!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Having clients I now call friends is the greatest accomplishment I could ever ask for. I have customers who have been a part of their life journey for more than 15 years now, from their engagements, newborns, and graduations. It is truly an honour.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Marketing in the right way to connect with the right people that fit your brand and will turn into lifelong clients. Every small business has this challenge, whether it be photography, yoga, or a clothing store.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do your research, and take your time so you can start on the right foot.
  2. Build relationships with others in your field; they will become the best colleagues you have ever had.
  3. Find a Trusted Marketing Manager who will grow with you. Mine is one of my favorite people (Natalie Moore of Moore Creative Consulting); we have a coffee date once a month to keep each other accountable.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

You never know when a moment is going to become a lasting memory, so whether you are hiring someone or capturing moments on your own, take as many images as you can!
