What's your business, and who are your customers?
My company provides career development services to successful individuals who are transitioning into challenging new leadership roles. Executive coaching empowers clients to manage stress, avoid burnout, optimize performance, and reach career goals. Coaching sessions help people to adjust their mindset and make specific action plans for success.
Tell us about yourself
I'm a psychiatrist and also became an executive coach 12 years ago when I realized that so many of my clients' difficulties -- and also much of their happiness -- stemmed from issues in the workplace. Being an executive coach allows me to work with leaders on a range of issues that improve both their quality of life and work performance. When they do well, their colleagues, employees, and family members also benefit. I find it highly motivating each day to have this kind of positive impact.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
It was extremely satisfying to add a new dimension to my professional practice (executive coaching) when I was in my mid-forties, then nurture it side-by-side with my work as a psychiatrist.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
It can be lonely dealing with the early stages of an entrepreneurial venture. The uncertainty of whether it will work out can sometimes be stressful and scary. It's important to find multiple sources of support and encouragement along the way.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Don't overestimate what you can do in one year -- or underestimate what you can accomplish in five.
- Keep advertising and other costs low -- focus on sharing great content for free online.
- Don't try to be something you're not -- constantly develop all the dimensions of your core passion.
