Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in skincare but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lea Eigard, President and Owner of Lea Advanced Skincare, located in Dallas, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Lea Advanced Skincare, and for the past thirty-some years, I have been providing skincare services and products with my signature approach to ageless beauty. I specialize in treating acne and damaged skin, but my singular passion throughout my career has always been to help others achieve youthful, beautiful skin, no matter their age. Central to my methodology is the understanding that we can face skin problems at any age, and so my clientele ranges from young people to busy professionals. I focus on home care and continuous maintenance to restructure the skin rather than one-off treatments.

Tell us about yourself

As a young woman, I experienced severe cystic acne and the toll it took on my self-confidence. It was through the long process of studying how the body worked, changing my eating habits, and incorporating supplements and exercise, that I was able to restore my skin to health. Through my own journey of understanding skin, I came to the conviction that the key to healthy and youthful skin is care from the inside out, a principle I’ve been able to carry into my own practice. And, as I’ve found, the confidence that comes with beautiful skin helps you further emote how you feel within. This is the image I want to bring forth in each of my patients because when your skin looks good, you feel good—at any age!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I’m thankful that I was able to run a successful business for thirty-some years in Southern California. During that time, I’ve written and published my own book on facial exercise and am now formulating an innovative product line. Life is never boring for me. There’s always more to do!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Hiring staff is challenging. It’s hard to find loyal workers who will be committed to your vision and stay on, especially through the early stages of building up a small business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Running in your own business is like being part of a marriage; you have to be dedicated to it and willing to spend long hours to make it work.
  2. Keep your vision clear; don’t be swayed by everyone else’s ideas on what you should do.
  3. Consistently offering quality service and excellent products that bring about results is the most important part of growing a business. Customers need to be able to depend on and trust what you offer them.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Business can be hard. To keep going, you have to believe in the product or service you’re offering and that it will have a positive impact on your customers’ lives. If you don’t believe in your business, how will anyone else? Second, it’s important to sincerely care about the people you’re working with—treat them like your dearest friends. In my time in Beverly Hills, these close relationships are what created and grew my longstanding clientele, many of whom became my friends. They are what made it hard to leave Southern California! But I’m excited to be restarting my business in Dallas, Texas, with the foundations I’ve laid. I’ll be offering highly effective treatments to different patronage, and I look forward to forming many new relationships.
