Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Katie Duffin, founder of Lazy Bake, located in Calgary, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Lazy Bake is baking made easy! Just add 1-2 ingredients to our kits, and voila, you're a pro baker. Try our Chai cookies (GF or regular available) or Dillapeño Beer Bread kit today, or sign up for our monthly subscription and get two kits sent straight to you each month. Our main customers are busy families (our kits are so easy that most kids can do them), people with dietary restrictions (GF and vegan options available), and those who like the idea of baking with beer!

Tell us about yourself

I was baking a ton during the first lockdown during the pandemic. I realized there aren't a lot of options around baking like there are for cooking (chefs plate etc.). If anything, this is the area people need more encouragement with, as a lot of people are intimidated by baking. I wanted to show my customers that it can be easy, fun, and delicious baking, something you can be proud of.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Building a community of over 2,000 followers on Instagram within a year of launching. Our local collaborations with Village Brewery and Harvest Moon Mills Flour.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Wearing all the hats - from finance to procurement! Always something to do.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Build a brand people can associate themselves with.
  2. Use professionals where you need help (photography, accounting).
  3. If you're building an e-commerce platform, I would recommend using Shopify.
