Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in content creation but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Laurel Tincher, content creator, and consultant, based in Palo Alto, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My mission is to help sustainable brands and climate startups reach their goals and make an impact in the world. I specialize in creative content creation, product development, and business strategy, and I have worked with a range of businesses, from small-scale eco-friendly companies to international corporations seeking to implement a sustainability plan.

My services help companies tell their stories in a unique and powerful way that resonates with their target audience while also increasing their revenue and building their following. I strive to create tailored solutions that not only help to increase their profit but also promote sustainable practices.

Tell us about yourself

My creative endeavors are fueled by my desire to make a meaningful contribution to the world, and I love taking ideas from concept to creation. Growing up in Silicon Valley, I was exposed to some of the most creative and innovative startups, which served as a major source of inspiration. And I was a photographer and filmmaker before social media was a thing, so I was naturally drawn to creating content. During college, I had the opportunity to collaborate with several entrepreneurs on various projects as a co-founder and creative. After graduating, I worked for an environmental author and then went on to run my own fashion brand. This experience exposed me to the environmental and social costs of mass consumption, which motivated me to turn my attention to climate change and sustainability and launch my consultancy and blog.

I am passionate about sharing stories that are inspiring, thought-provoking, and valuable, and I am committed to highlighting the importance of sustainability and protecting our planet. By joining forces with innovative startups and organizations, I am able to combine my passion for creativity and growing businesses with my passion for sustainability, and ultimately make a meaningful impact on this world.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Having brands and startups come to me looking for collaboration rather than me seeking them out. Being sought after for my work is an incredible feeling that I am immensely proud of. It is a sign of the hard work and dedication I have put into building my business, and I am thrilled that it has paid off.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the most challenging things is prioritizing my to-do list. It is easy to become overwhelmed by the sheer number of tasks that need to be accomplished, but it is essential that I focus my time and energy on the jobs that will make the most impact. This requires me to have a clear understanding of what tasks are most important and to dedicate my time and resources to those. It is hard to remain focused on the most important tasks when there are so many things that need to get done, but it is necessary in order to ensure that a business is successful.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Set out to solve a problem. If you offer a solution to a real problem, and you don't ever quit, you will find success.
  2. Even if you have funding, do an exercise in pretending that you don't. Spend wisely and with the intention of getting your business to the next step and building sustainable revenue. Conversely, make budgets early on for how funds will be spent when they become available so that you have a plan.
  3. Don't forget to have fun and enjoy the process of your entrepreneurial journey. One day you'll look back and say, 'those were the days.'
