What's your business, and who are your customers?
Laura Mahoney Fitness combines fitness and nutrition services to coach the busy woman to regain her health & fitness without sacrificing all of her free time. LMF also provides intermediate-advanced fitness programs for busy women who are looking to amplify their current workout routine without spending all of their free time working out. We are entirely online, so Laura can be in your back pocket, any time and anywhere.
Tell us about yourself
I worked for gyms for nine years in various roles starting from part-time 1:1 trainer and working my way up to become a Fitness Manager of a corporate gym. I was proud of what I had accomplished, but I still couldn’t dedicate as much time to my clients as I wanted to. Once the Covid lockdown started, I decided to go all in and start Laura Mahoney Fitness so I could create services where clients results would get better results and learn more from me, plus, I was more accessible in these well-rounded services.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I was pregnant and had a baby in my first year of business - talk about a lifestyle change! My business focus and services changed a few times during that period, but I am extremely proud of the outcome and the services I provide now because they are formed from my exact and real-life struggles as a busy mom and business owner. I love being able to relate to and support my clients who are trying to get back into shape, and I can do so genuinely because I was there too.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
When you are a business owner, it is hard to “turn it off.” Every possible opportunity to network and get that “last thing” done for the day can consume your life, and you may forget you have a life to live outside of your business. Learning balance is key to avoiding overwhelm and burnout and actually enjoying “going” to work every day!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Take messy action. The more I heard this from others, the more cliche it sounded, and the more I fought it. But it was my messy action that got me to where I am, and I wouldn’t be here without learning those lessons.
- Show up, even when you’re uncomfortable. Starting a business and gaining traction can take time, but you can’t have a successful business without showing up and putting yourself out there. (And once you do it, you will get more comfortable!)
- Reflect on your real life, your struggles, and your lessons, and use that to your advantage. When you can create services that relate to you, you can relate to your clients/customers and help them from a place of service. Their trust in you and the relationship you build with them will reward you tenfold.
