Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Laura Heflin, Founder of Live Healthy With Laura, located in Fredericksburg, VA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business offers nutritional services on an individual basis. I see all ages and help those struggling with diabetes, obesity, elevated cholesterol, and more.

Tell us about yourself

I am a wife, mother of two, nutritionist, blogger, and a three-time published author. Years ago, I struggled immensely with my relationship with food and became very sick and malnourished. In my healing journey, I later discovered the art of a balanced lifestyle and the medicinal beauty behind real, whole foods. I became so passionate about filling my body with these foods that I began to create my own recipes. Then I became certified as an AFPA-certified nutritionist. That was eleven years ago, and my business is going stronger than ever, and I absolutely love what I do! I get to work alongside my dad, who is a family physician, and we refer back and forth with each other. It's the best!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I would have to say each and every time a client is able to get off of their medication is a huge reward. Also, every time I see a client starts to finally relax and enjoy food once again- that's rewarding as well. Lastly, I am pretty proud of my three books. I have wanted to write books since I was a child, and a couple of years ago, that dream came true!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Balancing work life and mom life is definitely a struggle, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I equally love both aspects of my life, and though it can be difficult to manage both schedules, it always seems to work out.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Pick a name for your company that is unique and that you are truly in love with.
  2. Create a logo (or have one created for you) that reflects your business in a way you are proud of.
  3. Create a separate social media account for your business and post weekly.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Yes- don't hold back from fear of failure or fear of rejection. Dive all in, and one day you will look back and thank yourself!
