Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Laura Campagna, Founder of Laura Campagna Astrology, Tarot, & Energy Healing, located in Boston, MA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I have always loved giving tarot and astrology readings and energy healings to friends and family. Whenever I learn something new, I share it. Purely from passion, Laura Campagna Astrology, Tarot, & Energy Healing organically grew into a business. I first started offering readings professionally in the Boston area, and over the years, that extended to Western Mass, NYC, San Francisco, Portland, OR, and now all over the world.

My clients are curious people who are seeking to connect with the sacred aspect of life. We are all intuitive and empathic, but often people need validation about the path of their destiny when faced with choices or crossroads. Many clients come to me when they are going through a transition or have to make a big decision. It's incredibly affirmative to have a stranger who only knows your birth time be able to describe the challenges and opportunities before you accurately. Or to go through a health crisis and have someone send you an energy healing from a distance, which then facilitates a shift in symptoms or perspective. These kinds of magical experiences help people reconnect to their own inner spark of divinity within and reawaken to a sense of wonder at the world.

Tell us about yourself

Storytelling is one of the most ancient art forms. Humans are meaning-making creatures and what we tell ourselves to be true about the world has a profound impact on our experience of what's possible. Our hopes and dreams for the future are informed by our self-image and daily narratives. I hold an MFA in Creative Writing and have a background in feminist organizing and social justice activism. My work is motivated by a desire to provide an affirming and empowering healing space for people to explore vulnerable topics and gain insight into who they are at a core level.

As a practicing witch, it is my love for the earth and humanity that motivates me to get up and celebrate what's good every day. There is a great awakening happening in human consciousness. Whether we go deeper into the illusion of separation and isolation or open our hearts to connect with the truth of our existence, that we are all united in love, is a personal choice that has a far-reaching effect on the collective. Astrology, tarot, and energy healing are part of that great awakening and have played an important role in my own spiritual journey. It's an honor to support people in walking their path towards greater inner unity and unconditional love.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I'd say just running a small business is a huge accomplishment. Starting is brave. It feels like opening yourself up to something big and scary, which it is. It's vulnerable. Early on, a friend told me that opening her yoga studio felt like walking off a cliff. I love the Fool archetype in tarot and have found that to be true for my business as well, but the thing is, there are many cliffs. You leap into the unknown and are caught, but if you continue on the path, you have to keep making choices and keep taking risks. Leaving my steady job with good benefits to pursue my business full-time was another big risk. It just keeps going. But there's so much joy and amazement when it works that all the fear, doubt, and uncertainty feels worth it. When you find that thing that gives great meaning to your life, that is worth being in the struggle for, and it will ultimately become your greatest teacher.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Running a small business will bring every issue you have to your awareness. The challenges you knew about your personality and the stuff you did not see. It's better than therapy in terms of self-knowledge, which is why it's important to have support systems and ways of working that stuff out. The diversity of stuff also arises; you have to deal with the nitty gritty logistics and the underlying belief systems and issues.

For example, if you hate keeping a spreadsheet and tracking expenses, you may run up against some unhelpful beliefs about money. Or, if you dislike promoting yourself and feel weird about running ads, you may discover you have a fear of visibility and being seen that you need to deal with. So making time to refine your professional skills, stay current, develop business savvy, and do internal work – will keep you busy. It's common to feel like there's never enough time, but running your own small business will help you get clear about priorities real fast.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a sense of your own internal sense of YES and listen to that. Not in a reckless way, but in a steady, abiding, this is the next right step YES. That is your first guide on the path.
  2. Have a sense of your own internal sense of NO and listen to that. Not out of fear or insecurity, but because a lot will come at you when you run, and business and discernment are of the utmost necessity.
  3. Invest in a small business course/workshop and follow their practical advice. The sooner you start separating your bank accounts, paying yourself a salary, and building in time off, the faster your business will become sustainable. Also, track your wins and celebrate your accomplishments. It's as important as paying your bills on time and feels real good.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Community is everything! Find the people who are your fans and ask them to promote you. Let yourself be loved and carried by the people who are excited for you to succeed. Running your own small business is a meditation on the 6 of disks tarot card: be generous with what you have and practice receiving every time you can.
