What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a licensed psychotherapist in Georgia and Florida, and I specialize in working with high-conflict co-parents that are having difficulty co-parenting after a divorce or separation or due to conflict or resistance in their co-parenting relationship. I also work with adults with anxiety, with challenges in setting good boundaries, and those having difficulty in their relationship with themselves and others.

When working with adults, I think it is important to offer a space where they can process their challenges. This is why, along with individual therapy, I specialize in offering group therapy and support groups. My groups are for women and men who are dealing with divorce, high-conflict co-parenting, a breakup, moms with anxiety or dealing with rage, or those wanting community that allows them to connect with people dealing with similar situations or difficulties. It is a powerful way to learn, heal, and grow while still being held accountable for your feelings, thoughts, and behaviors.

Tell us about yourself

I am originally from a small town in Tennessee, where I picked up that desire to help others from either example from my parents or from those go-to people in the community. Witnessing my parents help others showed me that I can make a difference in some capacity in other people's lives. I ended up focusing on helping co-parents because I witnessed my brother go through a tumultuous divorce and a difficult time trying to co-parent with his ex. Even more importantly. I realized the lifelong impact it can have on a child. This motivated me to help my clients really find a way to co-parent in the best way possible so that their children will have a better example of how to adjust to change and respect themselves and others.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is having the courage to strike out on my own and be a solo entrepreneur. As a therapist, your clinical training does not really equip you to be a business owner. Many therapists that decide to go this route have to get additional training to be able to understand what it means to run a practice while maintaining ethical guidelines and being profitable. So taking this route for me has been daunting but so much more rewarding.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing that comes with being a business owner has the ability to relinquish control. You are so entangled and invested in your business that, at times, when you need help, it can be difficult to release tasks or consult with others. If you don't figure out how to delegate, you will quickly burn out. I had to learn that lesson because I can't do all the things or wear all the hats. So seeking out freelancers that can help with various aspects of my business has really been essential for me.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

For those looking to start, run, or grow a business, I would first say be very clear on your vision. You can't grow your business if you don't have a vision. Next, connect with other like-minded people. Running a business can be isolating, especially if the people around don't have that point of view or experience. Build a network of entrepreneurs that you trust. This can be a source of connection and growth as a business owner. Lastly, as you build your business, pour back into yourself. You are the nucleus of your business and brand, and it is vital that you take care of yourself.
