Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mandy Jacobellis, CEO and Founder of LAshX, located in Beverly Hills, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

LAshX is a brand of beauty products focused on improving the natural health and look of eyelashes and eyebrows. LAshX professional products are sold to professionals who do lash and brow services, like high-end spas and salons, and LAshX retail products are sold directly to consumers or wholesaled to the same spas and salons.

Tell us about yourself

I started LAshX after working in Los Angeles as a celebrity makeup artist and discovering eyelash extensions. I was one of the first to offer these services and quickly became LA's Lash Artist to the Stars. In working with so many clients and myself, I noticed the industry was really missing some key products and that the available products were pretty toxic. I believe you cannot have beauty without health, so I wanted to create a brand that not only outperformed the competition but improved clients' and professionals' health at the same time.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have had the privilege of working with the most amazing clients from around the world, but I think my biggest accomplishment is just staying in business after 17 years. The business has been through so many changes and highs and lows. Enduring and thriving through whatever has come our way has been an accomplishment for my whole team!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing for me as a business owner is trying to create balance in other areas of my life. It's easy to become obsessed with your business, but I actively need to try to make space for family time and other areas of my life.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do not open your own business to have more time or to have more control of your schedule. Every business needs someone actively running it; if it isn't you, make sure you have the right person in place.
  2. Take time to appreciate the wins! For me, it's easy to always be working toward the next goal, but I really enjoy the accomplishments as they happen!
  3. Who you employ is the most important decision you will make. A great team makes or breaks a business!
