Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Monica Kornblum, Owner of Language Lions Speech Therapy, located in Mansfield, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own and operate a Pediatric Speech Therapy company and serve clients who need speech therapy in the DFW metroplex.

Tell us about yourself

I have always wanted to start a business and have been an entrepreneur at heart. As a child, I was always creating products and selling them to my friends at school. In college, I stumbled upon an Entrepreneurship Club and knew that one day I would start and run a business. It has been a lifelong goal for sure!

In 2020 I started Language Lions, left my full-time job, and never looked back. My family and little boys keep me motivated for sure. Every day I wake up and work hard for them. It is nice because I can work around their schedule. Even though it seems as if I don't take many breaks (since someone has to answer the phones and schedule clients), it is nice being able to have more flexibility and only answer to myself.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I was a bit capped in my earnings at my previous job, and within two years of starting my business, I have revenued over 6 figures! We also have served over 100 families in the past two years. I still can't believe we have reached that many people.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Within the past year, I have had many difficult situations. Many have centered around not having processes or contracts set up. This definitely was a first-time business owner mistake, but I highly recommend to anyone starting a business to consult with a lawyer to develop a system of protocols or contracts. As you grow your business, you definitely will need them!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just go for it! Do not wait around to get started... time goes by so fast. I started running Language Lions part-time at first so that I felt less pressure. This helped as I could take my time setting up everything legally first.
  2. Find a mentor or take classes for the specific business you want to run. I have two amazing mentors who have helped me tremendously. I have also taken numerous online classes.
  3. Believe in yourself, work hard, and believe that everything will fall into place. Honestly, having a positive mindset works wonders for me, especially on difficult days.
