Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ambre van de Berg, Founder of LALA Tequila, located in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are one of the world's fully female ran tequila brands. Our 100% agave tequila is crafted in small batches by an award-winning distillery in the heart of the tradition, Jalisco, MEXICO. LALA Tequila aims to make the MOMENT of enjoying tequila memorable and introduce the MEXICAN tequila culture to the European market. Our objective is to create a female-driven, socially conscious, and delectable tequila for those who don't settle for anything but THE VERY BEST - for themselves and the world.

Tell us about yourself

As a yoga instructor with years of experience, I have had the privilege of leading classes in various locations such as NYC, Mexico, and Amsterdam. One of the most fulfilling aspects of my job was witnessing people from diverse backgrounds come together to share a unique experience. Humans thrive in communities, and I believe that there are endless opportunities to create and foster them. Although tequila was my drink of choice in the US, I noticed that it was relatively unknown in Europe. This observation sparked an idea that ultimately led to the creation of LALA Tequila. My life philosophy is to stay true to yourself and pursue your passions, even if they seem unconventional or unusual. LALA Tequila is a prime example of this mindset and has grown into an exciting and successful adventure.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Staying grounded and not losing myself to the passion of making it successful... earlier this year, I was so focused on LALA Tequila that I did not make time for other projects. Projects that actually inspire LALA Tequila so now I'm more strict with carving out time for my hobbies like kitesurfing. Doing a step back and knowing I can be so much more creative if I also embrace other hobbies was my biggest accomplishment ;) But getting a SOHO House listing, and sell at the Amsterdam Airport, and hosting some festivals this summer is definitely my second best.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Patience... You see the potential and the opportunities, but sometimes you can't do it all or not yet... for me, that's the hardest.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. The way you talk with your co-founders/team members, for example, we don't say there is a problem... no, it's a challenge. I truly believe those little changes can make a big impact.
  2. Be stubborn and set HIGH standards and even higher goals; never ever be realistic.
  3. Higher people with other skill sets than you...and always lift up others around you and share your success.
