Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brighid An Lasair, Owner of Labyrinth Walking, located in Myrtle Beach, SC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own Labyrinth Walking; we're a spiritual shop located in Myrtle Beach, SC. Our customers are a wildly diverse group of magical humans from all walks of life seeking the path to connect with the divine.

Tell us about yourself

I feel like I fell into this business. I grew up in shops, either that my mother owned or that I just spent a lot of time in because I was always looking to read and learn. It was through this industry, however, that I found my passion for helping others connect with their spirituality and find a sense of healing. I started offering readings professionally when I was 13, mostly at fairs and in my mom's shop, but nonetheless, I loved every minute of it. As I entered adulthood, I wanted to expand my ability to help and counsel others, so I pursued different modalities of energy work and holistic healing, like Reiki, crystal healing, sound healing, and herbalism. I have a love for sharing knowledge, which also drove me to teach others what I had learned during my years of study. My motivation is deeply connected with educating others; spirituality is often misunderstood and stigmatized in the media, which can present an inherent danger to those who participate in minority religious and spiritual practices. By being out in the open and willing to educate, I like to think that I'm helping to reduce the stigma around it for those in the community.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

For me, my biggest accomplishment is being able to pursue my passions and share them with others. It may sound simple, but I'm fortunate enough to get to live my dream every day while also creating jobs and fostering a safe haven for those in need.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest part of being a business owner is genuinely a toss-up between work-life balance. The idea that if you love what you do, you never work a day in your life is absolutely true, but it also means that there is absolutely a struggle to balance what is "work" and what is "life."

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Dream big - and I mean out of this world big. If you settle for something small, that's as far as you'll get.
  2. Be authentic. If you don't genuinely love what you're doing, your customers and clients can tell.
  3. Research everything. Everyone will always have an opinion of how you should approach something and find what feels right to you. Put in the time and research all of the details instead of stopping at the first viable result. This can be sources for products, methods of operating, platforms that you want to be part of, marketing strategies, and even physical location.
