Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Krystal Yates, owner of EBR HR Experts, located in Lewisville, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

EBR HR Experts is a Talent Management firm that specializes in two separate customers. We started EBR to help small businesses make sense of employment and compliance regulations while also creating a solid Human Resources foundation on which they could grow and become more successful. Our typical client is hiring their first employee, up to about 20 employees.

This naturally led to working with job seekers. Along with our love for HR, we wanted to help employees navigate the increasingly difficult waters of finding the right job. We are a group of professionals with a passion for improving the employment process.

Tell us about yourself

I discovered Human Resources while working part-time in college but quickly found myself ingrained in the world of small service businesses. That allowed me to focus on my field of interest while learning many other aspects of running a business. As anyone who has ever worked in a small business knows, we all wear multiple hats.

After many years of working for other business owners, I decided to give it a go on my own. I love solving problems. Whether it is helping a business owner do the right thing or a job seeker find their dream job, I help make lives better. I couldn't ask for a better living.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I'm so proud of the fact that I was able to publish a book back in 2018. The Insider's Guide to Your Dream Career cuts through all the bad advice job seekers tend to get and gives good, common-sense advice. Writing a book is daunting. Finishing it was definitely one of my proudest moments.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest parts of owning a business is making the best use of my time. Scheduling is hard when you are pulled in multiple directions. I'm a people pleaser, and my client's success feels like my success. I always want to put them first. But I also have to juggle the day-to-day operations of the business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't quit your day job until your new business can sustain you financially. The #1 reason I've seen small businesses fail is the inability to manage their personal finances. Expect it to take two years before you are financially stable. I always encourage my clients to please prove me wrong but assume I'm right.
  2. Avoid negative people. There are always people who think you won't do it or have a problem with every solution. Stay away from them and focus on surrounding yourself with people who believe in you.
  3. Start building your board of advisors. Get a mentor (or several!). Keep people around who can provide honest feedback and listen to them.
Bonus Advice) Networking was hands down the best skill I learned while starting my business. Get to give, and you will create a trusted group of advocates who will open doors you never dreamed of.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

If you have a dream, take one step towards it every day. It doesn't matter how small of a step; just keep moving forward.
