Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Krysta Harcus, certified Functional Nutritionist, based  in Oliver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a certified functional nutritionist, and I help adults struggling with eczema or psoriasis. My online course and coaching services are designed to help people go from covering up their itchy, dry skin to creating the lasting clear skin and confidence they dream of.

Tell us about yourself

I struggled with eczema for over 10 years. It started in my ear of all places, and the doctor, of course, prescribed steroid creams, but I have always taken a more natural approach to my health, and who wants to put goop in their ear? I went down the Google rabbit hole trying to find a natural solution, but everything was just topical - aloe vera, oatmeal, copious amounts of lotions, etc. Over time, my eczema spread to my face and scalp.

My Dad was the one who sparked my passion for nutrition when I was young, as he would always share what exactly was in our food. We even started making kombucha together when I was around 10 years old - way before it became popular!

When he came across a documentary on the microbiome and functional medicine in November 2018, I quickly discovered that harnessing the power of the microbiome is the most effective way to get rid of eczema. I have now been eczema free for over 3 years.

Sadly, my Dad passed away in March 2019, and while it has been the toughest experience, it has also been the most motivating. I created an online course using the name my Dad came up with just a few weeks before he passed away so that I could honour him. I now use all my knowledge, research, and certification to help others who are struggling with their skin condition through my Ditch Itchy Skin Method.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

That every day I get to be an example of what’s possible for others. I used to be the shy, quiet person in the corner. Now I am confident, and I get to be my authentic self without my skin condition holding me back. I have truly created the life I desire, and I believe that getting rid of eczema or psoriasis can be the catalyst for others to do the same. It lights me up when my clients share their life-changing results.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

It can be a lonely path to take, especially in the online business world. Others often don’t understand and therefore don’t support you, but when you do find the right support system, it’s pure magic.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Definitely find a support system! Even if your family and friends aren’t behind you, there are people out there who believe in you and your ideas.
  2. Invest in yourself! I don’t know if it’s just part of being a business owner or if I took a particularly personal growth-oriented path, but investing the time and money into my spiritual and self-development has majorly paid off.
  3. Serve others! They aren’t lying when they say it feels good to help others. The impact I get to create in other people's lives not only helps them it also creates a ripple effect in changing the way people think about their health and wellness.
