Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Krystal Hall, Founder of Krys Stylez, LLC, located in Charlotte, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business name is Krys Stylez, LLC. I, Krystal Hall, help women look and feel their best through personal styling, wardrobe hacks, and creative direction services. My customers are typically millennial women looking to elevate their wardrobe, women who want to feel and look their very best for a special occasion, or women who just need a little more spark to their outfit. Most people don't realize that a personal stylist is very imperative for several reasons. Personal Stylists help boost your confidence, reduce stress, and save you time when you're trying to look and feel your best!

Tell us about yourself

My name is Krystal Hall, and I'm not only a personal stylist but also a plus-size influencer hailing from a small area known as Gates County, NC. Growing up, I developed a true love and passion for all things fashion. I used to read the latest magazines religiously for fashion inspiration (Seventeen Magazine was my fav!), and I watched plenty of YouTube videos to see other plus-size women like myself. Throughout my adolescence, I was always best dressed for school and never missed a chance to strut my stuff!

I realized I wanted to start a business my sophomore year of college (March 2018) while attending North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, NC. I wanted to have a purpose, I wanted to help others, and I also wanted to make some extra change. With the help of my mother and close friends, I made the decision to become a personal stylist and name my business after myself, Krys Stylez, because fashion and styling were something I was good at. I styled all of my friends for various occasions, and my peers always came to me for fashion advice. Not to mention, I did plenty of fashion shows on campus during this time and made myself known for my personal style. This left me with a gut feeling that being a personal stylist was the best path for me!

Upon discovering my new passion, I reached out to some of my peers to help me bring my vision to life. My dear friend Kiara Nelson made my very first logo, website, and color palette for my business. My mother even invested in my very first business cards, flyers to pass out around campus, and pens to leave in my classrooms. I was on the right track! After carrying out the journey within college, I moved to Charlotte, NC (a newer and bigger city), and I wanted to level up my fashion and styling skills while also attracting loyal clients that could help take my business to the next level. I finally made my business an LLC for more credibility and coverage, rebranded my website, narrowed down my niche to women only, and became more consistent on social media and by attending networking events within the city. While I'm still within that transition of leveling up, I have seen so much more growth and progress within my business!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner thus far is styling my first six-figure client this year.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is being consistent in every avenue of your business, especially if you don't have a team. As a solo business owner, I have to be the personal stylist, creative director, social media manager, content creator, and more.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. The first tip is to just START! Don't keep pushing your business idea's off to the side because everything isn't quote-on-quote perfect. If you do that, you'll miss out on so much and delay your own dreams.
  2. When things get tough, IMPROVISE, PIVOT, AND KEEP GOING! Take a break if you must, but keep going. And always remember, "You don't have to be motivated, but you must be consistent."
  3. Never stop doing your RESEARCH! Whether you've been in business for years or just starting out, you can always learn something new to help you elevate yourself and/or take your business to newer levels.
