Tell us about yourself

I actually started in the fashion industry! Out of college, I worked in merchandising for major brands such as Puma and Polo Ralph Lauren. After my husband and I got married, he relocated to Chicago, and I couldn't find a job that I truly enjoyed. Enjoyment was a top priority for me as I didn't know anyone in Chicago, and I really wanted to be happy. I realized that what made me truly happy was a local gym, specifically taking classes there. I landed up becoming a front desk associate at 2 gyms near our apartment - working the night and weekend shifts just to get in the door. I knew I wanted to get certified and eventually teach classes - so I started observing the other trainers. One evening, an instructor did not show up to teach. The manager frantically asked if I would be comfortable teaching, and I said, "yes!". That spur-of-the-moment opportunity turned into my first class on a schedule. It also gave me the confidence to audition and secure positions at companies like Flywheel and Equinox. After two years in Chicago, we moved to California, where I taught at multiple Equinox locations and eventually became a group fitness manager. I also taught nationwide for Cycle for Survival. 4 years later, we moved to New York, where I continued to teach until the pandemic hit. When gyms shut down, I took the initiative to teach classes on social media. Putting myself out there got me exposure to major publications such as Women's Health, Byrdie, iFit, and Pop Sugar Fitness - where I became a fitness contributor. Working with such inspirational brands gave me the courage to start my own platform. I wanted to create a place where people felt like drive, and a dream IS possible. You can do anything you set your mind to as long as the passion is present. When I launched at the end of 2020, I never looked back. I love what I do and the community the brand has created!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment was stepping out on my own. For many years I've worked under big brands, teaching in the style(s) they wanted to see. When I created KE On Demand, it was the first time I felt like I could truly be myself. I could teach the modalities I was most passionate about. I could create programming that I've proven on my own body to be effective. I've taken everything I've learned over the past 10 years and created a cocktail for success to establish myself as a globally-recognized fitness instructor.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Comparison. In such a saturated market, it is so challenging not to look at other companies and think, "how did they get that? why am I not there yet?". I remind myself constantly not to let others' paths get in the way of my current joy. If I keep my eyes on what is important, then my brand will continue to flourish.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Connect to Your Customer - Gain an understanding of what they're looking for! I created a Facebook group for our members to connect and share their experiences. It's helpful for me to interact with them within that group, as it helps me learn what is working and what is not. I always want to see our squad happy!
  2. Create Brand Personality - I believe people feel they can connect and engage with me because I'm real. Authenticity, heart, values, and vision are what separate you from others. That can actually be the greater resource that you possess.
  3. Be Creative and Stay Focused - Always be open to new ideas (especially from your clients) so you can adapt and grow. At the same time, recognize that success takes time - these ideas must be aligned with your core objective to truly make your business a success.
