Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in clothing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kristin Baucom, Founder of okbet, located in Honolulu, HI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

okbet is an independent label juxtaposing nature and streetwear. I forage locally for plants and collect food waste from the community to naturally dye garments. My customers are like-minded individuals who appreciate the natural dye process.

Tell us about yourself

My name is Kristin, and I am the founder and creative director of okbet. I first got started by way of dyeing Nike socks with olena (turmeric). I have always been interested in fashion, streetwear, and nature. I am motivated by curiosity.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has been the ability to connect and collaborate with local businesses and artists.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One challenge that I'm currently working through is finding balance. Being a business owner is often a delicate dance because there is no definitive separation between work and personal life. It is your own responsibility to have structure and discipline.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a plan.
  2. Set realistic goals.
  3. Don't compare your unique journey to anyone else's.
