Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kristen Fox, Licensed Mental Health Counselor, based in Brooklyn, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a psychotherapist in private practice. I specialize in trauma-focused therapy (and utilize EMDR) as well as couples and relationship therapy. People seeking to process past traumas, gain coping skills, or work on their relationships are the people who seek me out.

Tell us about yourself

I started my private practice in 2013 as I desired the opportunity to focus specific needs of clients, specifically those wanting to process traumas and work on their relationships. Starting my course provided me with the freedom to work in ways that felt more organic and less limiting.

I have a deep appreciation for people who want to cultivate a deeper understanding of themselves, who want to look at all parts of themselves to move towards the person they want to be, to show up in relationships in the best way possible. I am honored to witness people's journey, to help them recognize that they are stronger than they realize.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment was opening my solo office in Brooklyn in 2019 when I was nine months pregnant. I wanted to have a space that I could create that was both stylish and comforting, and that would help clients feel safe to do hard work.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest part of being a business owner is that every business aspect relies on me. I have to monitor and manage all elements to ensure the business continues running smoothly and with no interruption.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start small, break big ideas into small steps.
  2. Connect to the community you're looking to become a part of, ask for help, and provide service.
  3. It's a process. Give it time. Things will start to fall into place.
