Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in musical education and social media but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kristan Toczko, who founded her career as a freelance musician and content creator located in Canada.

What do you do?

I work full-time as a professional harpist, performing and teaching across Canada and the world. As an advocate for my profession, I joined the social media platform TikTok in 2020, and within less than a year, I grew my channel to over 800,000 followers. Now with hundreds of thousands of followers across my social media channels, I actively work as a Content Creator and teacher to arrange and record covers from classical to pop to video game music and create educational videos about the harp.

Tell us about yourself

Music has always been a part of my life, and I have played the harp since I was young. I keep doing what I do because I love every moment of it and love being able to give my gift of music back to the world.

What's your biggest accomplishment?

My biggest accomplishment would be having built my own freelance performance career and social media channels from the ground up.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a musician?

The behind-the-scenes time that performance prep takes, and that this job isn't a 9-5 job that ends at 5. Emails, planning, practice, and other prep work are constant for a performer - the music never stops!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow their profile today?

For those looking to begin harp, my biggest recommendation is to sign up for private lessons with a teacher. For those looking to start freelancing, my advice is to say yes to everything and be aware the people you meet at gigs are the people who will get you more work (networking is important!). For those wanting to begin building their social media presence, my advice is just to post - don't wait until it is perfect before you share it with the world, as perfection tends to hinder us.
