What's your business, and who are your customers?

Our business is a secret shopping company, and we specialize in video secret shops, primarily in apartments.

Tell us about yourself

I started as the first Director of Sales and Training for Mark-Taylor, Inc. in 2000 and left to start Business Observations because there was a need in the apartment industry for video secret shops to be utilized alongside training. At Mark-Taylor, we lost our video secret shop provider, and it was then I discovered this need in the industry. I'm passionate about enhancing the productivity of sales teams through coaching and presentations. I believe in setting my training students and mentees up for success by providing tools & resources for the industry.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is achieving results and helping others. More specifically, in a short time, Business Observations reached a million dollars in sales from our clients; in addition to that, our video secret shops have helped thousands of onsite teams develop their sales and communication skills and their productivity.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things is putting yourself out there and marketing yourself and your company. It sometimes is hard to talk about yourself and not come across as gloating. You have to be able to overcome that and get out of your own head-- that is the only thing that is stopping you.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Top 3 things I'd say to someone looking to start:

  1. Get out of your own head and persevere.
  2. Have confidence and believe in yourself even if you think no one else believes in you.
  3. Embrace Risk.
