Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Derek Stephens, Owner of Krav Maga CDK, located in Chevy Chase, MD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The name of my school is Krav Maga CDK Self-Defense Center. We teach self-protection to both teenagers and adults.

Tell us about yourself

I've been into martial arts my entire life. I've also always had a calling to teach back anything that I've learned. My passion is self-defense training, and my purpose is to teach. To teach self-defense is a dream come true.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

There is no single biggest accomplishment that I've had. Every step that I've taken, whether it was big or small, has brought me to where I am now.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing for me is actually the business part—the accounting, the marketing, the managing, etc. When you own a business, you spend the most time running the business. People who enjoy the business aspect generally have more financial success.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find your passion. What do you love to do?
  2. Find your purpose. How can you use your passion to help people?
  3. Don't chase the money. Follow the dream.
