Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nadia Austin, founder of Koa Kai Photography, located in Grimsby, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Photography is all about freezing moments in time. The authentic and real connections that are created between people are the ones that I strive to capture and bring out in front of my lens. My clients are those who want to make the everyday moments special. I focus on artistically capturing them in those moments and connecting with my clients to create an environment where they feel like they can be themselves. That's when the magic happens!

Tell us about yourself

I became a mother in 2018; that year I was home and caring for my daughter was the year that I first started learning photography as an art. I wanted to take as many photos of her as I could. In 2020 while many of us went through such a difficult time, I wanted to be a part of something that people would look back at and reminisce about. So I participated in a socially distanced photography project called "the front porch project" through this, I photographed my neighbours and friends on their porches - this was the real launch of my business. My friends and neighbours were unbelievably supportive of my work, and referrals began from there. It's been an amazing journey, and I look forward to what 2022 will bring.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Gaining trust from my clients and having so many of them become repeat clients. I am so grateful for their trust.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Balance. Being able to keep on top of everything as a one-woman-show is a challenge. I want to accomplish so much but have to remind myself that "Rome was not built in a day."

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Trust your skills. Don't be afraid to put your work out there, make that phone call, or share that post. It's so easy to get stuck in your head, worrying about what everyone will think or if they will "like" your work. People are amazing, and if you give your all to what you do, it shows, and people will support you.
