Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in software development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lourdes Juan, Founder of Knead Technologies, located in Calgary, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Knead Technologies is a software development company that provides logistics solutions to food rescue organizations across the world. The need for food rescue organizations is growing, as is their need for technical solutions. The app connects food vendors with volunteers who deliver the food to those in need. The app collects data relating to food transportation, breaks down barriers for community mobilization, and ensures drivers adhere to food safety standards. Knead is creating a white label technology that other food rescue organizations may use for their customized logistics.

Tell us about yourself

I have started six diverse companies and non-profit organizations. I began a food rescue charity ten years ago, and I saw a need to address the logistics for the charity; the team prototyped and built an app that the charity uses today to manage delivery routes, rescuing over $ 1 million of food with the technology. Having other volunteer groups and organizations reach out and seeing a need for organizations across the globe to use this type of technology to manage food rescue, we have created a private label technology that other food rescue organizations may use for their logistics. I am passionate about reducing food waste and want to propel the impact for other organizations working in this space.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We are a new business but recently won a national pitch competition.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I love what I do, and I love the work, so the hardest thing for me is to take a break from it!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Ensure you are working towards solving a problem.
  2. Work every day to appreciate and build a good team.
  3. Track your impact.
