Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Kimberly Kluthe, founder of Kluthe Wellness, located in Edmonton, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Kluthe Wellness is a family Acupuncture & Manual Osteopathy practice. Specializing in fertility, pregnancy, and women's health issues. The clinic supports families from infants to the elderly through all the complications and challenges that life may bring physically and emotionally. At the clinic, we provide friendly, caring, and empathic care.

Tell us about yourself

I have been practicing Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese medicine for over 20 years. I have a Business Diploma in Finance from the Nait School of Business and then went out to start my own business. I love helping people and landed on acupuncture when I saw a sign in front of MacEwan University advertising the program. After graduating, I opened my first clinic in Morinville, where my husband Darren grew up, and a satellite office in Thorhild, where I grew up, bringing acupuncture to these rural communities for the first time.

Over the years and many other businesses later, my husband and I relocated back to Edmonton, and now I work from a home-based office. I recently went back to school to learn Manual Osteopathic Therapy and now offer both modalities in my practice. I love helping people feel well, and I work diligently to promote wellness care instead of sickness care. Teaching my patients to come regularly for prevention and maintenance. Many years later, I provided a practice that creates lasting relationships with my patients and now is treating the 4th generations in some families.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Helping couples become a family. It's the most rewarding thing that I do. Becoming a part of someone's life story in such an amazing miracle is a lasting legacy that I cherish.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Uncertainty of income.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Surround yourself with a great accountant, bookkeeper, and staff. Get others to do things you don't like to do so you can focus on doing the thing that makes the most money.
  2. Diversify - have at least seven streams of income to get you through the slower times, such as investments, long/short term rentals, network marketing, and supplements in addition to your traditional business income.
  3. Network regularly - create referral partnerships.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Being in business for myself is the only way I can have the life I want. Set your business up to support your lifestyle. Don't live by default, and be intentional with what you want so your business doesn't own all of your time.
