Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kaley Metler, Owner of KJ's Transformation Fitness, located in Millgrove, ON, CA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Outdoor movement is what we are all about. Connect back to nature as much as we can, restoring our mental and physical health. We offer personal training, small group fitness, Pilates, learn to run, walk it, youth sports, nutrition coaching, meal prep, and cooking for you!! We cater to the active aging women getting ready to enter retirement or are in retirement. We also love helping out in youth sports.

Tell us about yourself

I worked as a field engineer for around 15 years for an oil and gas company and then a water company. I met a wonderful man to start a family with along the way and had two pretty amazing kiddos!! After my kids were born, my role changed when I had to sit at a desk. I did it for a few years at a great office but quickly realized that sitting at a desk for 8 hours of my day was not exactly "healthy" in my books. So I gave up that good-paying office job to do something I truly love - help others get stronger and be proud of themselves. My faith that I have a purpose here on this earth motivates me. I love being face to face with my clients and seeing their lives changed. After they leave, you feel a real sense of accomplishment!!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being recognized in the community as one of the "go-to" personal trainers. I feel so honored when people recommend my services!! I felt so small starting out, like a little fish in a big pond and was honored to receive awards through Flamborough votes and Reader's Choice awards.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest for me is doing the behind-the-scenes work, the marketing, and putting yourself out there a bit. Also, taxes, I really dislike doing taxes, lol!!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find a coaching community. I recently joined the TD mastermind group, which has been so helpful.
  2. Collaborate/Network with local businesses/people. It is hard to do things alone, so get out and find some partners.
  3. Make sure you make time for downtime and healthy routines for yourself. When you own a business, it can consume you if you let it.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I was raised on a farm and ranch and will always value what my parents and grandparents have taught me(work hard, practice your faith, and eat homegrown natural foods). Now that I have a family of my own, we have a garden and chickens, which makes me feel great to show my kids how to work hard to provide their own food. That is my story in a nutshell, and I am forever grateful to have found my happy place in life.
