Wisdom of the Body - Kin Medicine

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jessica Golden, Founder of Kin Medicine, located in Oakland, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I have a holistic health business. I am an acupuncturist, herbalist, hypnotherapist, and sensuality coach. I specialize in women's health and womb healing. I support women in connecting to their bodies to release overwhelm and anxiety and instead access more joy in their everyday life.

Tell us about yourself

I started my career in journalism, writing for newspapers. I was always drawn to stories of health and healing. After years of my own health challenges and burnout from living in a deadline-driven world, I found acupuncture and other healing modalities. As I healed my digestive system and skin, I knew I wanted to learn more and offer this same experience to others.

I am motivated every day by the opportunity to connect with other people. To offer a space where they can relax into who they truly are. We often have so many roles in our world, and sometimes our roles become our identity, but we are so much more. The experience of helping people connect back into their deepest selves is quite profound. Being able to offer that every day helps me stay true to myself because being alive on this planet is a gift, and the more we can stay present to all the blessings around us, the more we heal ourselves and the planet.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest business accomplishment has been to navigate the pandemic and maternity leave in 2020 and 2021 while still steadily growing my business from a place of sustainable trust and steady momentum. These changes and pauses in my business could have been times when I pushed too hard and burnt out or didn't see the flexibility and adaptability that was needed to respond to these new conditions. Instead, I stayed true to my business values, adapted, and thrived through these experiences.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things to do as a business owner is keeping the larger perspective in mind. It's easy to get swept up in all of the little things that happen day to day or to feel like you are constantly in responsive mode. But staying focused on your bigger vision helps you keep it all in perspective so you know what really supports the business and what isn't worth spinning your wheels on so you can keep your energy high for what really matters.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure it's something you are passionate about. You'll be spending a lot of time on this, so being inspired about your business lets it flow more organically.
  2. You don't have to do it all in a day. Make sure it's sustainable.
  3. Create structures that support you. When your business is created on strong foundations, you can build more easily.
  4. Remember to take care of yourself. When we are nourished, the ideas and solutions flow.
