Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in soap making but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kimberly Brown, Founder of COCO XO Artisan Soap, located in Upper Marlboro, MD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

COCO XO Artisan soap is a blend of both science and art. By combining the scientific knowledge of the last 150 years and the artistic creativity of soap making and body butters, the formula is safe, luxurious, and unique. The products are made from scratch by the cold process method and double boiling.

Tell us about yourself

As an owner of a soap-making business, I grew up learning the process from my great-aunts, who instilled in me the value of handmade products at a young age. When the global pandemic hit in April 2020, I found myself with more time on my hands due to the quarantine measures. That's when I decided to re-learn the soaping process and gift the soaps and body butters to my friends and family as a way to spread love during such a difficult time.

To my delight, my loved ones were overjoyed with the care packages I sent them filled with fragrant soaps and, later, body creams. Their enthusiasm encouraged me to continue sharing my creations with others and eventually led me to start my own soap-making business. I am grateful for the support and encouragement of my friends and family, and I am excited to share my handmade products with even more people who appreciate the benefits of natural, handcrafted skincare.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Building a community of people that are influenced by shopping small and local.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Knowing when to scale your business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Obtain a mentor willing to share all they have learned as a business owner.
  2. Allow your current employment to help fund your business.
  3. Always invest back into your business.
