Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in candle-making but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sean Blishen, founder of Kilig Candle Co., located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Kilig Candle Co. is a self-care business that caters to everyone while creating scents and products that can be enjoyed in all of your spaces. We focus on creating products that can become everyday staples to your self-care routine while being as eco-friendly and sustainable as possible.

Tell us about yourself

I'm Sean, and I'm the Founder of Kilig Candle Co. I've always been into DIY projects and sustainable self-care, which led me to create my brand. I've always used candles in all of my spaces and wanted to create a product that was safe for me and my home. I believe that everyone should enjoy self care and if I can create a product that does that for someone, I'm happy!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I would have to say my biggest accomplishment to date would be implementing our feeding program into my business. For every product purchased, we donate one meal to an impoverished child in the Philippines. Since starting our initiative in March 2021, we have donated over 7000 meals to date.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I think trying to find that work-life balance can be tricky. It's hard when you love what you do, and you always want to be there for your business! Right now, I'm trying to give myself an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening to take time for me, whether that be a yoga session or taking some time to read a new book.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

First, don't doubt yourself. You need to be your own biggest cheerleader, even on those hard days. Second, there's no harm in failure, so don't be afraid to make mistakes. We learn from these mistakes, and that's what helps us and our businesses to grow (we've all been there, so know you're not alone). And third, get out there and meet people! My favourite part of my business is getting to meet people and connect. Not only is it a reason to socialize, but you'll meet people who can be supportive of you and give you great advice.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

It's never too late to start something that you are passionate about!
