Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Karen Hetz, Founder of Kids' Cake Boxes, located in Redwood City, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Kids' Cake Boxes strengthens family bonds and nourishes childhood creativity by baking sweet memories with perfectly-sized cake baking kits. Each kit comes with all the dry ingredients, fabulously themed decorations, and even the cake pan you need to start baking memories with your little one. We lovingly bring families together by encouraging children to cultivate their creativity in the baking arts and build their confidence in the kitchen and deliver one-on-one quality time between parent and child. Kids' Cake Boxes provides all the beginnings your child needs to create a perfectly-shareable, edible work of art.

Tell us about yourself

I am a mom of three and a military spouse, and I began my business in 2020. During my husband's time in the Army, I often parented alone while my husband missed out on important moments with our children. Determined to help families capture important family moments and create memories, I created Kids' Cake Boxes. My motivation is driven by my mission to create childhood memories through baking and bonding.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As a business owner, my biggest accomplishment has been my ability to pivot. There's always a place to improve, to grow, and there are always changes in the customer environment to which I need to react. Understanding that change means growth has been one of my biggest accomplishments.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner is finding the time. Time is our only personal non-renewable resource, and deciding how my time is spent on what priorities can be a challenge. Because time is the only thing I do not get back, I work hard to spend it efficiently and wisely.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get started. Take the leap. You get to decide if this is "Day One" or if you'll simply stick with "One Day..."
  2. There will always be a version 2.0. Your concept will change, and it will grow. Pivoting is inevitable, so roll with it and grow.
  3. You're going to hear a lot of "No" as you get started. Hang in there, keep going, and believe in your mission.
