Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in clothing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kassandra Gillis, Founder of KG Jeans, located in Maple Ridge, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My pants were designed for athletes and curvy women that have a hard time fitting jeans. They do fit most body types and are super comfortable.

Tell us about yourself

I started training about four years ago after having my son. I started to realize that although I had a few pairs of jeans, none of them fit how I wanted. I was living in leggings and comfortable clothing, so I started playing with the idea and decided to get some samples made. It took over a year to get the design and fabric right and also find manufacturers that understood what I was trying to do. Many late nights are sending messages to find someone that would be able to make a smaller bulk quantity for me.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has to be seeing women walking around wearing something I designed (and loving them.) I only recently launched in March 2022. I've done three trade shows so far. I find it makes a big difference for them to be able to feel and try the jeans on.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The things that never crossed my mind. It seems there is always something that doesn't work exactly how you planned. I've learned early this is a part of being an entrepreneur. Being able to make changes and be creative when problems arise.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Stop thinking about it and just take that first leap, especially if it's been on your mind for a long time.
  2. Support other businesses and make connections.
  3. Don't be afraid to take risks. Failure is a part of the process; if you're not failing, you're not trying hard enough. Don't let it bring you down.. only the strong will survive.
