Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kevin Ellerton, Founder of Meditation Magazine LLC, located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Meditation Magazine is a globally distributed publication! Our magazines are sold in Barnes & Noble, Whole Foods, Sprouts, Chapters/Indigo, and thousands of stores in 20+ countries around the world!

Tell us about yourself

When I was 22 years old, I was running a large real estate brokerage firm on Wall Street. We had 5 offices in Manhattan, 90 agents, and $5mm in revenue. But it wasn't fulfilling to me, so I left the business to my partner and went to live in a Buddhist monastery in Thailand. While there, I had a very powerful experience of going from depression/anxiety to bliss, equanimity, and transcendence. I knew it would be my life's work to share that with the world. That has been my guiding light ever since.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We have thousands of subscribers all over the world. Many of them say that our magazine has changed their lives. To me, making this type of impact, making people happier, and making the world a happier place, is my biggest accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing for me is the fact that there are always urgent things that need to get done, so it's hard for me to relax and actually take a break from thinking about work. Luckily, I have magazines on my desk called "meditation," so I am constantly reminded to meditate.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Choose something you're passionate about but also has short-term AND long-term potential to support you and your family (or future family).
  2. Focus your time on the things you're good at and delegate the rest (Fiverr, Upwork, etc.) but learn how everything works as you go along.
  3. Meditation really helps keep your mind clear, focused, and relaxed -- you will need that on your entrepreneurial journey.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?
