Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Liz Nunez, founder of Keto Bakery LA, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a keto bakery, tailoring our treats to individuals living a low carb, sugar-free lifestyle - including people with diabetes! Everyone deserves to be able to enjoy a sweet treat, and we aim to provide that without that dreaded word “cheating.”

Tell us about yourself

I’ve always loved baking and eating sweets. When I started a keto diet, I dearly missed eating something sweet after meals. I really, really wanted a cookie. Motivated to make a cookie that fulfilled my cravings but kept the carb count down, I started to create traditional desserts with a modern dietary twist. After years of recipe development and many failed attempts, dishes started coming together. I’m starting to see more orders coming in with notes from customers (especially diabetics) who were not able to enjoy a cupcake without their health suffering the consequences. Being able to help families come together over birthdays, so no one is excluded warms my heart. Helping people of all ages enjoy a sweet treat, guilt-free and tasteful full drives my passion to continue creating new, healthy treats.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Ha! This is a great question. Honestly, being able to run my business is my greatest joy and accomplishment. Getting to focus full time on making my dream business a reality, helping others enjoy food, and sticking to their goals, it really is everything I wanted. I continue to be challenged to learn new skills every day.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Wearing multiple hats! Not only am I the baker, but I’m also the customer service specialist, sales rep, accountant, marketer, quality control, etc. As I continue to grow the business, I look forward to hiring great people to help!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Build yourself a strong foundation, both internally and around you. Do your research (read or listen to books) and have people in your corner to hold you accountable. I am fortunate; my coach is always ready to walk me through the good and bad times, and I am surrounded by a network of people supporting and rooting for me. When I struggle, I go to them for a reality check. Be the best version of yourself when interacting with customers. As corny as it sounds, treat them how you’d like to be treated, and go above and beyond when possible! Also, don’t undervalue yourself! Don’t go out giving all the discounts, don’t do things for free. Your time is valuable, as are your resources and creativity. You are worth what your charge for your products or services. Lastly, take time for yourself! We are only human, after all. Setting aside this time has been so important for me. It keeps me loving my business and what I do.
