Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in fine arts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kendrick Rudolph, Founder of Highly Favored Art, located in Houston, TX, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Highly Favored Art, at its origin, was a custom canvas painting business that has since grown to an array of surfaces and has even become its own merchandised brand. The ideal customer is a unique color enthusiast and/or a streetwear junkie.
Tell us about yourself
As a self-taught artist, my mind is most clear when I have a paintbrush in my hand. Over the last 8years, I've grown from a Business College grad who needed to decorate my own walls to now commissioning art for friends and art supporters across the country. Daily I am motivated by what I consider to be gaps in the art consumer market. I want to create relatable art that is displayed in your cubicle or above your headboard. I want to create merchandise that is cozy for your home but is also a conversation piece in public.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
The self-preservation of my creativity often trumps traditional business acumen. That being said, as an artist, my biggest accomplishment is having the confidence and ability to share my talents with the world. There are a tremendous amount of talented people that, unfortunately, can't take the first step in showing the world what they are capable of.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things is knowing when to take risks. Business and personal growth come from places of discomfort. As a business owner, it's important to take calculated risks and not just make decisions on the fly.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Understand that on the other side of any obstacle is success, often look in the hypothetical mirror and ask, "Does the business reflect who I am?" and always remember to have fun.
