Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kelly Sinning, Founder of Kelly Sinning Counseling, LLC, located in Fort Collins, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own a private therapy practice in Fort Collins, CO. I work with individuals and couples of varying ages and needs. Mainly I see women struggling with self-esteem, fertility, and postpartum mental health struggles and couples. I see children as young grade school age and adults into their nineties.

Tell us about yourself

I was born and raised in the Silicon Valley of California and moved out to Colorado in 2010 to finish my undergraduate degree. I began my post-college life working as a Child Life Specialist, which enhanced my love for helping others and encouraged me to pursue a Master's degree so I could do more in terms of how I could help. I have now created a practice that allows me to be fully present with each of my clients, which is one of my biggest motivators. I love that I am able to connect with people on such a deep level and have the time to process, plan, and think about how to best continue to support each individual or couple.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is creating a balance that allows me to feel fully present and invested in each aspect of my life. A healthy work/life balance is hard to attain, and I feel very proud and grateful that I am able to have that.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The responsibility of being a business owner is absolutely the most difficult thing, and the uniqueness of being a private practice owner means there is no one other than myself to work toward goals, create revenue, or even reach out to clients when I have something personal come up and need to reschedule. This is another reason that balance is so important- if I were to spend 60 hours a week seeing clients, I wouldn't have the bandwidth to work and focus on other pieces of my business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Give yourself grace! There are things that will pop up that you won't be able to anticipate; give yourself grace in finding the right way to work through the unexpected,
  2. You can design your business to be different from the masses. Just because everyone else does it a certain way doesn't mean you have to as well. Design your business to fit your life, not your life to fit your business,
  3. Always be learning; surround yourself with people that have more experience than you!
