Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kelly France, founder of Kelly France Addiction Recovery Coaching, located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm an addiction recovery coach trained by the (Tony) Robbins/Madanes Training school. I help people in addiction recovery take their life from below average to exceptional after they find sobriety. After spending years in 12-step meetings, I noticed that the people who continuously relapsed were those who had not stepped outside their comfort zone to create an exciting life for themselves after they got clean. I was that person for over five years until I got sober for good in 2011. They had no compelling future to look forward to, so they always went back to drugs or alcohol for a temporary fix.

I have discovered that when we create hope for our future by designing it exactly how we want it to unfold, everything changes in our present day as well, and to me, that is the secret to addiction recovery.

Tell us about yourself

Back in 2008, I was homeless, suicidal, 30 pounds overweight, and hopelessly addicted to crack. I had to steal from people to support my habit. If you had told me back then that I would be answering questions so that people could read about my addiction recovery coaching business in 2022, I would have told you to pass me the pipe because you were clearly high.

I started this business because I saw a need for people to be inspired to step outside of their safety zone after they get sober and live life like it was meant to be lived - happily and with excitement! I saw too many people die as a result of their addiction because they thought being clean was enough. They forgot to dream about their future self.

I love being an example of my own strategies. I use them every day. I am a risk-taker, and that's a big part of recovery for me. Commit first and figure the details out later.

I've run over 20 marathons in the past six years. My favorite memory from all is finishing the NYC Marathon in 2021. I've gone from a chain-smoking, overweight crackhead to a guy who finished the NYC Marathon in the top 10% of the 25,000 field. I am super proud of that.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Completing my two "Success In Sobriety" Coaching Courses which are written and filmed to not only help people in addiction recovery re-create their lives but take them to a level of happiness and success they have never seen before.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The uncertainty! Although Tony Robbins tells us that the quality of our lives is based on the amount of uncertainty we can tolerate, so I'm okay with that.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Pay for a mentor, school, advertisement, etc. - Invest money in your business. It may not just happen for you because you have a great idea.
  2. Every night - make a list of 1-3 things that you are going to do for your business the next morning.
  3. The next morning, before you distract yourself with anything else, get those 1-3 things done.
