Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Michaele Evans, Founder of Kell's Well, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Kell's Well is a wellness coaching and consulting agency that teaches women how to create a lifestyle of daily self-care and advocates for systemic change to support self-care in the workplace. Kell's Well serves professional women and creatives who struggle to practice regular self-care and organizations that are committed to creating a more inclusive, wellness-oriented environment.

Tell us about yourself

Health and wellness have been the through line of my life, from my decade-long career in healthcare-focused financial institutions to my personal wellness journey as a yoga practitioner. However, the fever pitch that pushed me to start Kell's Well occurred when the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, public health data from my primary care & behavior health clients, and clinical data from my studies in a clinical psychology master's program concurrently underscored the dire consequences of stress, anxiety, and depression, on Black women and communities of color. As a Black woman, I could attest to the beliefs and behaviors that compound existing systemic factors, cultural norms, and intergenerational cycles that contribute to poor health. Given my own struggles with chronic stress, anxiety, and burnout, I sought to create solutions that could supplement existing primary care and mental health services. I recognize that our medical system cannot support the rising health crisis and that the culture of our society regarding work and health is only getting worse. I am motivated to inform others as I find joy and flow in my daily life by employing the systems I teach in my coaching programs. I want to see women choosing themselves so that they can prevent chronic illness and live long prosperous lives.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has been using my knowledge to help the women in my life whom I love and care about the most. Their investment in me has afforded me the opportunity to live differently than they did at my age. It was of the utmost importance that I supported them and contributed to their healing journey.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The most difficult aspect of entrepreneurship so far has been accepting that trade-offs are necessary to do my job well. I have a ton of ideas I would love to execute and people I would love to serve, but implementing boundaries creates sustainability and freedom. As difficult as it may be, this means occasionally missing out on good opportunities to focus on opportunities that are more aligned with my goals and purpose.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Take the leap and know that you will need to continuously leap and bet on yourself at different stages of your business.
  2. Get comfortable with uncertainty and know that resistance is normal.
  3. Learn from those that have gone before you while also embracing your own journey. Each lesson is shaping you into the person you need to be for the next level of growth.
