Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Matan Volach, Founder of Kelcanet Inc., located in Kelowna, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are artisan chocolatiers producing real Belgian chocolates from clean ingredients.

Tell us about yourself

I was a frustrated private chef with a background in catering and the restaurant industry. I wanted more flexibility and control over my craft and always appreciated the art of chocolate making. I moved to British Columbia in 2020 and opened Drop Naked Chocolates in the mountains of beautiful Kelowna, BC.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We have survived the first two years in business and have not sacrificed our commitment to the best quality with no shortcuts.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hours and constant obstacles are a challenge to overcome, but we work out of passion, and it doesn't feel like a job.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Do not get stuck on one product or service. Find a few (2-3) key products that your customers will repeatedly buy over time AND that you can scale and make profitably and focus on those. Drop every other distraction, and pivot quickly and without hesitation when something isn't working.
