Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in leadership development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Keena Mosley, Founder of Momentum Leadership Group, located in Redondo Beach, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Momentum Leadership Group provides organizational improvement and leadership development solutions for early education, non-profit and social service organizations. With an emphasis on mid-level leaders with the tools needed to increase their impact and team effectiveness.

Tell us about yourself

I think I have been a teacher all of my life. I have so many fond memories of playing school in my grandparents' garage and teaching my pretend students everything that I knew at the time. Not much has changed; the love for sharing every bit of my experience and success with others still inspires me. As a career educator who moved through the org chart, I quickly began to realize the void in supporting and developing leaders. My greatest joy as a coach is to see other leaders reach their goals and grow in their roles.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Every registration, every contract, and every invitation is an indication that someone trusts me with their professional development. The trust of others is my biggest accomplishment. I don't take that for granted.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Business ownership is not for the faint of heart. Starting a business can be grueling. It takes courage to start and even more courage to keep going with no roadmap, guarantee of success, or clear indication of what comes next. As someone who previously worked in companies with departments to support the various functions, the solopreneur reality was a huge wake-up call. I instantly became finance, IT, HR, marketing, and everything else that comes with business ownership. I didn't even have co-workers to vent to!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do what you can and what is most important: All business owners have numerous ideas, but you can't execute them all at the same time. Stay focused on your ideal customer, your primary focus, and grow strategically.
  2. Pace yourself: The biggest way to fail as a business owner is to overextend yourself. You have the capacity to do what you can do. Don't feel pressured to overspend, stretch yourself too thin, say yes when you can't, or fall victim to any of the pressures from those that don't live in your reality.
  3. Get help when and where you can: Being timid about outsourcing can slow your growth and take your attention away from the things that need your expertise.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

The most important thing in business is consistency. Consistency builds trust and gives you the credibility needed to nurture repeat clientele. As potential clients are studying you, consistency will keep you relevant.
