Encouraging Connection to One's Self & Others - KC Yoga Kula

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health & wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nancy Kaul, Founder of KC Yoga Kula, located in Kansas City, MO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

KC Yoga Kula is a yoga studio. We offer public classes in various styles, including gentle yoga, restorative/yin yoga, hatha yoga, vinyasa yoga, and aerial movement. In addition, we offer a training certification for those who want to deepen their practice and teach yoga.

Tell us about yourself

I started practicing yoga almost 20 years ago, and it transformed my thinking about who I am. I am stronger, more flexible, and more grounded. I wanted to share the positive effects with others, and that led me to learn how to teach yoga and learning how to teach others to teach. I am motivated daily by the desire to positively impact my community and by creating a space where people can feel empowered to follow their dreams.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is bringing together like-minded individuals to create a community that is supportive of one another. That community has seen me through the hardships of COVID, and I am grateful to still be in business.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things is learning to focus on the things you do well without being distracted by the newest trends. The consistency of purpose and attention to the fundamentals often help us progress. But we live in an era that is constantly seeking novel experiences.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know your why. Understand yourself well enough to be authentic and do what makes your heart sing. Stick to that.
  2. Be realistic about the investment you can make in your business in terms of time and money. Don't overextend yourself.
  3. Treat people well. Honor boundaries. Be respectful.
