Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Keren Buynak, Owner of KB Resumes, located in Parkland, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a professional resume writer and the owner of KB Resumes. I specialize in crafting the professional story of my clients. I work with people from all industries (Fortune 500 to start-ups) at various stages of their career (entry-level to C-Suite) with different project needs (new job, internal promotion, returning to the workforce after a career break, changing industries, etc.) My philosophy for resumes is to make them easy to digest while engaging the reader, focusing on what you are looking to do, and then showcasing your experience to show why you are qualified to do it.

Tell us about yourself

I started my career in publishing, working in marketing at PEOPLE and Fitness magazines. I joke that I probably worked in HR in another life because I've always loved connecting people to jobs, writing resumes for friends and family, cheering them on, and guiding them during the hiring process. When I wrote my sister's resume for a position she really wanted at the American Cancer Society, the HR person commented on how professional her resume was. My sister got the job and gave me the idea to take this from a hobby to a business. I truly love what I do. I get excited every day to work with my clients on building their brands. A strong resume can transform the confidence of the job seeker. There is no greater feeling than when clients call me to tell me they landed their job.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I look back at when I started my business in 2015, writing resumes for free with the hope of receiving endorsements, reviews, and testimonials. I felt that if clients shared their positive experiences working with me, it would create trust and attract others to contact me for their job-searching needs. It worked. Word-of-mouth and referrals are still the bulk of my new business.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me, it is maintaining and balancing a steady stream of projects with quality time as a mom.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Customer service and integrity should be top priorities. How you treat people matters.
  2. Continue to learn and pursue professional development so you can stay informed about the trends in your industry.
  3. Monetize your abilities. Look for ways to offer additional services to your customers. Expand your portfolio of offerings. Don't be afraid to grow.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I always say that my clients have done the hard work. All I have to do is put the pieces together to create the story. Resume writing is a luxury service that I believe everyone should have access to. It opens doors to future opportunities. If anyone would like guidance, feedback, a brainstorming session, or a complimentary resume review, please feel free to contact me. I'd love to help you.
