Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kalyn Brooke, Founder of KB Creative Media, located in Orlando, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I started KalynBrooke.com over ten years ago, helping women learn how to budget and save money at home. Over the last few years, we've shifted our direction towards the mindful planning and productivity space, where we encourage high-achievers to prioritize their mental health and pursue positive personal growth from a place of wellness and self-care.

Tell us about yourself

I've always expressed myself through writing, so starting a blog was a natural next step. When I realized bloggers could actually make money with their websites, I committed to learning everything I could about the process in order to turn my blog into a full-time business. As an online entrepreneur and content creator, you wear multiple hats—from writing to designing graphics to email marketing and social media. The variety of what I do keeps me coming back. There's always a new technique for me to learn and test.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

A few years into my business, my husband unexpectedly lost his job, and I was only making a part-time income at that point. That was right before I launched my first book. We worked on that launch together, which was both a success and a turning point. It showed us that not only do we love working together, but we could also make this business our full-time income. That flexibility allowed us to sell our home, buy an RV, and travel/work remotely from the road!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The online industry is ALWAYS changing. A strategy that works one day may not work next week. You have to be ready to pivot.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Put your head down, blinders on, and do the work. It doesn't do you any good to compare your journey to anyone else.
  2. You have to be willing to experiment and not let a "failed" attempt completely derail you. Look at the data objectively and separate your decisions from your emotions.
  3. Focus on what the market wants, not what you want. Obviously, you need to be passionate about your business! But always test and survey your customers because their preferences may surprise you... and you need your customers to stay profitable.
