Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kayla Girgen, RD, LD, CPT, Founder of LIFe – Lose It Forever, located in Minnesota, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Registered Dietitian and Bariatric Coach. I help women get back on track after bariatric surgery. My 1:1 and group coaching programs have helped hundreds of women learn how to heal their relationship with food and learn how to manage their blood sugar levels to achieve a lifetime of success after weight loss surgery.

Tell us about yourself

My business started with blogging in my free time. As my audience engaged more with me, I was inspired to create online content and programs to help them reach their weight loss goals. When we feel better, we do better, and I’m inspired every day to help women live their best life after bariatric surgery.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is replacing my salary as a clinical dietitian with my own revenue streams. The flexibility to create my own schedule and the freedom to take time off on my terms is amazing!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the most difficult challenges for me was developing a routine and holding myself accountable. When you don’t have to report to work at a certain time or have someone else tell you what to do, it takes personal responsibility to manage your time well and maximize productivity.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

My advice for anyone looking to start their own business are:

  1. Just start! It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or intimidated, but you won’t know what you want (or don’t want to do) unless you start.
  2. Start your email list sooner than later. Social media can be frustrating to navigate, so capture your audience’s emails so you can nurture and provide value without worrying about an algorithm.
  3. Be genuine and focus on serving your audience. Consumers are smart and appreciate transparency, so lead with integrity, and the money will follow.
