Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Emily States, Founder of Kaulumaika LLC, located in Kailua, HI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a native Hawaiian artist passionate about learning about my Hawaiian heritage. I share the things I know through my art, storytelling, social media, and products. My community is full of Hawaiians and people who love Hawaii and its rich culture. I focus on telling the facts about Hawaii rather than the false stereotypes permeating the world.

Tell us about yourself

I started Kaulumaika after my husband, and I decided we wanted to learn Hawaiian and speak it as a family. As we learned Hawaiian, we also learned about the history and culture of our ancestors. It became apparent to us that no brands were solely focused on native Hawaiian plants, language, and culture, so we started one of our own. What motivates me each day is the challenge of going against the stereotype of what people think is Hawaiian. Pineapples, monstera leaves, and girls in coconut shell bras are the last things that should pop up in a person's head after interacting with my brand.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been running my business from home while being a mother of three. There have been times I've had to sacrifice what was best for my business for what was best for my family. Each time I've had to do that, I've felt the most accomplished because it means that I've built a business that supports my family in every way.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing that comes with being a business owner is staying consistent. I'm very creative, so I like to work on whatever I'm most passionate about in the moment rather than what needs to get done the most.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a clear, strong, and unique purpose surrounding something you're passionate about.
  2. Build sustainable working habits.
  3. Care about your community and your customers.
